Getting started
New to Kalamos? The User Guide walks through reading scripture, the split-pane workspace, handwriting, importing documents, and setting up optional sync.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No. Kalamos has no accounts and no sign-up. It works fully offline out of the box.
Where is my data stored? Is it private?
On your device. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you turn on sync or export a backup — and those are end-to-end encrypted with a passphrase only you hold. See the Privacy Policy.
How do I get more Bible translations?
Open the library and browse the available modules to download, or connect an API.Bible key. Kalamos ships with a public-domain translation so you can start immediately, offline.
Can I handwrite with an Apple Pencil?
Yes. On iPad, touching the page with the Pencil enters drawing with the native tool picker; a finger tap leaves drawing, so scrolling and zooming still work with your finger. On other platforms, use a stylus or the ink toggle. See the guide.
How do I move my study to a new device?
Turn on bring-your-own-cloud sync (Nextcloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, or
OneDrive) on both devices with the same passphrase, or export an encrypted
.kalbackup file and restore it on the other device. Restoring
merges — it never overwrites existing notes.
I lost my sync/backup passphrase. Can you recover it?
No — and that's by design. Your data is encrypted so that only your passphrase can open it. Neither we nor your cloud provider can decrypt it. Keep your passphrase somewhere safe.
Is there a web version?
A browser version is in progress. It will appear at kalamos.bible/app when it's ready.
Is Kalamos really free and open source?
Yes — it's released under the GPL-3.0 license. See the Terms.
